The Order Myrtales includes 14 families of dicotyledenous flowering plants taking its name from the Myrtaceae (myrtle family). Many species are woody plants, often with flaky bark, opposite leaves and a chacteristic basal narrowing of petals.
 
The family Lythraceae includes pomegranates. Members of the Onagraceae (evening primrose family) are cultivated for their medicinally useful oils.
 
The family Melastomataceae includes a few succulent species in the genus Medinilla.
