70th Anniversary Events

The society celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2010 and we had a couple of extra events to mark the occasion.

Bluebell Planting   10th April 2010
The events started in April with EHS members joining the Eastcote Conservation Panel one Saturday morning to plant natural English bluebells. The site was in the grounds of Eastcote House Gardens, along the wooded banks of the River Pinn, near the path to the allotments. Take a look in the Spring and you should see a blue carpet starting to emerge.

Annual Quiz
The Annual Quiz was held in March. This was well attended and we had 16 tables and 100 people competing across a range of subjects. We enjoyed a cold platter brimming with tasty snacks and took our own tipple along to make the evening go with a swing.

Our next Annual Quiz will take place on Saturday 2nd April 2011 at 7.15pm at the Eastcote Community Centre, Southbourne Gardens. It costs £8 per person including a light supper. Bring your own drinks and glasses and if you don't have a team of six please still sign up as we'll put teams together.

Eastcote Celebration & Teddy Bear's Picnic 17th July 2010
In July the Eastcote Conservation Panel, the Friends of Eastcote House Gardens and the Eastcote Residents' Association worked together with the Council to organise a celebration of Eastcote. This was to mark the official opening of the replanted beds in the Walled Garden. There was a fantastic turnout from local community groups and the warm weather led to a well attended day.

The Society had a teddy bears' picnic with over 20 bears being brought along by visitors. The bears sat together under a gazebo with tea and cake. We were relieved that all the owners remembered to collect their bears at the end of the afternoon.

One of our members kindly offered to do face painting next to our teddy bears and there was a queue for her services all day.

Several of our members' families had their own "grown-up" picnics whilst keeping an eye on the teddy bears.

Coach Trip   4th September 2010
In September we had the Society's first coach trip. 50 of us met one Saturday morning by the Trading Hut and boarded a coach to RHS Wisley.

We were lucky to have a warm, sunny day. Some of us joined a tour of the garden with a volunteer before lunch and continued to explore the gardens and the shop in the afternoon. There were some extra "passengers" on the return coach journey as several pots had been purchased.

It seemed to be a successful first trip and on the return journey there were already ideas being expressed on "where shall we go next year?"

Dinner   16th November 2010
The 70th anniversary meal was held at Sambuca restaurant in Eastcote in mid November. We were a group of 26 diners and enjoyed excellent food and great company. It was nice to see some new faces join this occasion. This was the 11th annual meal we have held in consecutive years. It started following the success of the 60th anniversary meal and we hope the tradition will continue for many more years.
